In the University environment, we have scholars who are teaching what scholarship actually means to their students, so the process of scholarly communication is a learned activity that affects both faculty and students.

The Scholarly Communication Institute  at the University of Virginia Library defines scholarly communication as more than just  peer-reviewed publication. The Institute  focuses  on the "process of communication itself, in the broadest sense how scholars find information, create knowledge, and communicate among themselves, with students, and beyond the academy with other audiences."

Scholarly communication methods are rapidly changing. The Association of Research Libraries (ARL)  prioritizes Scholars & Scholarship which provides information about such digital scholarship and data management.
