In Class Exercise: PsycINFO Keyword Search and Thesaurus; Impact Factors

Part 1 – Describe Your Initial Search Terms

  1. Open your email account and a new message. NOTE: Save your email message as you complete each part!
  2. In Email: Write PS4363 and your name in the subject line of the email message. 
  3. In Email: Put nwolff@stmarytx.edu as the recipient in the To line.
  4. In Email: Write one or more sentences describing your research topic.
  5. In Email: List a least 3 terms (keywords) that you could use to search for this topic. 

Part 2 – Keyword Search for Articles in PsycINFO

  1. Open PsycINFO. (see link the Databases box to the right)
  2. Search for your keywords. Separate terms with the word AND or putting the words or phrases on separate lines. 
  3. In Email: Write your search in the email message.
  4. In Email: Note the number of results from your search.
  5. Select an article from the results.  (Pick an article of use to you; scan the page and choose something you want to read.)
  6. In Email: Copy or type the article citation in the email message. 

Part 3 – Use the PsycINFO Thesaurus to Refine Your Search Results

  1. Click on the article you selected. Quickly skim the keywords, abstract, and subjects. Pick one word from the Subjects that relates to your topic.
  2. Click on the Thesaurus in the database's top blue bar.
  3. Type in your subject term in the "Browsing: PsycINFO--Thesaurus" search box.  Click Browse.
  4. Click on the word from the results.
  5. In Email: Copy entry on your and the complete entry including year term introduced, definition, and  a broader, narrower, or related terms. 
  6. Click on box next to the subject term, click add, and then the Search button.
  7. In Email: Copy the number of search results at the top of the result section.

Part 4 - Search keywords in ERIC or MEDLINE

  1. Search for the keywords you used in Part 1. Separate terms with the word AND or putting the words or phrases on separate lines. 
  2. In Email: Note the number of results from your search.
  3. Select an article from the results.  (Don’t just pick the first one; scan the page and pick an useful article.)
  4. In Email: Copy or type the article citation in the email message.

Part 5 - Find Impact Factor for a Journal

  1. Open Eigenfactor and Google Scholar Metrics, linked in the Journal Impact Links box to the right.
  2. Search each database for the name of the journal you found in PsycINFO.
  3. In Email: Copy the impact rank from each source and paste the information in your email message. 

Part 6 – Send the email

  1. Email your exercise results to nwolff@stmarytx.edu
