In Class Exercise: Searching PsycINFO and More

The objective of this exercise is to improve an initial keyword search in PsycINFO by using the specific search terms in the PsycINFO Thesaurus.

Part 1 – Describe Your Initial Search Terms

  1. Open your email account and a new message. NOTE: Save your email message as you complete sections!
  2. In Email: Write one or more sentences describing your research topic.
  3. In Email: List a least 3 terms (keywords) that you could use to search for this topic. 

Part 2 – Keyword Search for Articles in PsycINFO

  1. Open PsycINFO. (see link the Databases box to the right)
  2. Search for your keywords. Separate terms with the word AND or putting the words or phrases on separate lines. 
  3. In Email: Write your search in the email message.
  4. In Email: Note the number of results from your search.
  5. Select an article from the results.  (Pick an article of use to you; scan the page and choose something you want to read.)
  6. In Email: Copy or type the article citation in the email message. 

Part 3 - Search keywords in ERIC or MEDLINE

  1. Choose which database you want to search.  ERIC is good for education-related topics. MEDLINE is good for medically-related topics.
  2. In Email: Note which database you chose to search.
  3. Search for keywords that are related to the words you searched in Part 2. Separate terms with the word AND or putting the words or phrases on separate lines. 
  4. In Email: Note the number of results from your search.
  5. Select an article from the results.  (Don’t just pick the first one; scan the page and pick an useful article.)
  6. In Email: Copy or type the article citation in the email message.

Part 4 – Send the email

  1. In Email: Write PS3383 and your name in the subject line of the email message.
  2. Email your exercise results to nwolff@stmarytx.edu.
