There are numerous federal agencies that have materials relevant to engineering. Here are some of the major agencies that sponsor computer science and/or engineering research. See the National Laboratories box for links to subsidiary locations.
Energy (DOE)

- Federal Communications Commission (FCC)Federal agency that establishes and enforces policies relating to interstate and international communication by television, radio, cable, satellite, and wire.
- National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST)NIST is involved in a variety of science-related research areas. These include AI, bioscience, civil engineering, electronics, energy, IT, manufacturing, nanotech, etc.
- National Telecommunications & Information Administration (DOC)Agency that advises the President about telecommunications and information policy issues. Interests in internet policy, broadband access, and more.
- National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)Conducts independent accident investigations, advocates tor safety improvements, and decides on certification appeals
Department of Defense (DOD)
The DOD sponsors research in variety of fields. This box lists a few of the DoD science & technology sources.
- Air Force Research LaboratoryThe Air Force Research Laboratory, located at Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH, sponsors research projects in "warfighting technologies for our air, space, and cyberspace force."
- Army Corps of EngineersWorks on building and maintaining US infrastructure and providing military facilities. Includes R&D efforts. The Corp of Engineers notes holding "environmental sustainability as a guiding principle".
- Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)DARPA funds research projects military R&D that has led to several civilian technologies " such as the Internet, automated voice recognition and language translation, and Global Positioning System receivers." DARPA recruits limited-term project managers that define and run programs.
- Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC)DoD's portal for defense-related reports. There are publicly available collections and other reports that require logins (limited to DoD and authorized personnel).
- Naval Research Laboratory (NRL)" the Navy's full-spectrum corporate laboratory, conducting a broadly based multidisciplinary program of scientific research and advanced technological development directed toward maritime applications of new and improved materials, techniques, equipment, systems and ocean, atmospheric, and space sciences and related technologies."
National Laboratories
The US government operates several national laboratories that conduct research of interest to researchers in computer science, engineering, physics, and more. This box includes links to agencies that operate national laboratories.

Annual Survey of Communication ServicesCall Number: C.3 138/3-6:Aggregate statistics on companies providing telephone service, telegraph and other electronic messaging services, broadcasting (radio and tv), cable tv, and other communications services. Several years, including more recent information, are available online from the Census Bureau.
Beyond the ionosphere : fifty years of satellite communicationCall Number: NAS 1.21:42171997. Print and Online. A collection of papers originally presented at an international conference celebrating the 50th anniversary of the publication of Arthur C. Clarke's influential articles on the possibilities of satellite-aided communications. The papers cover the history of the development of communications satellites. There is also a timeline, glossary of acronyms and suggestions for further reading.- Census of Construction IndustriesCall Number: C 3.245:1967-1992. Part of the 5-year Economic Census cycle. Statistics are available by industry and by geographic area. Preliminary reports may be received in microfiche. Starting with 1987, major report series are also received on CD-ROM. Starting with the 1997 Census, information is available online at the Census Bureau.
- Census of TransportationCall Number: C 3.2331967-. Part of the 5-year Economic Census cycle. Parts include: National Travel Survey, Truck Inventory & Use Survey, Commodity Transportation Survey. Preliminary reports may be received in microfiche. Beginning with the 1987 Census, some reports are also received on CD-ROM. Recent Census information is also online from the Census Bureau.
