President's Peace Commission

Father John Moder, President of St. Mary's University, hosts this panel discussion featuring Dr. Michael Burgan, the Director of Counseling Center at St. Mary's University, and Dr. Julius Lundy, the Director of Counseling at Northwest Church of Christ. Dr. Burgan begins by comparing lifestyles in 1950 with the current lifestyles of the 1990s, using Erik Erikson's theory of identity. Dr. Lundy speaks about the male attitudes, stereotypes of men, and the current changes in the male identity. Kym Hemley, of the President's Peace Commission, serves as the hostess for this session, which features Deidra Coleman and Dr. Dixie Van Eynde of the Counseling Center at St. Mary's University. Dr. Van Eynde speaks first and shares her thoughts on female identity. Ms. Coleman shares an example of one of the theories about women's identities, particularly that of the woman's role in a relationship. Dr. Larry Hufford, of the President's Peace Commission, hosts this panel discussion featuring Dr. Sandra Burgess, Professor of Psychology in the Department of Family Practice at the University of Texas Health Science Center; Dr. Joseph Lazor, the Director of Curriculum Instruction for the East Central Independent School District; Amado Ramos, a private practitioner; and Ruth Rogers, the Vice-President of Student Development at St. Mary's University. Dr. Burgess speaks about the development of boys and girls and the differences that are established at this very young age. Dr. Lazor shares his experiencees with middle school children's sexuality. Mr. Ramos provides insight into the sort of changing gender roles he's seeing in his private psychotherapy practice; he's having many single-father households concerned and confused about raising daughters. Vice President Ruth Rogers has noticed that in regards to child-care she's seen nearly as many men participating as women; she urges a respect for a person as an individual. (58 minutes)

Judy Geelhoed, of the President's Peace Commission, serves as the hostess for this panel discussion featuring Joanne Tompson Hall, the Crisis Intervention Program Supervisor for Catholic Family and Children Services; Amy Hartman, the Medical Social Worker for SAMM Shelter through Centro del Barrio; Sarah Lozano, the Director of Development of St. Vincent DePaul Archdiocesan Central Council of San Antonio; Leonor Marquez, the Program Director of Health Care for the Homeless; and Kelly Ann Mulligen, the Project Monitor of Bexar County's Department of Community Resources. This panel provides an overview of the homeless situation in the United States and in San Antonio, a history of the homeless in San Antonio and the country, a profile of homelessness, the homeless and health care, and the public policy regarding homeless. Dora Ybarra, of the President's Peace Commission, hosts this address by Donna Garrett, the Program Director of the San Antonio Child Protective Services, who speaks about the stressors that many children must try to cope with, such as marital problems, alcoholism, and unemployment of parents. She explains some common reactive behaviors of children in these situations; she also presents the parents' issues and stresses. A question and answer period concludes this session. Professor Bowie comments on the concept of celebrity and how celebrities shape identity for young adults. Ms. Cuellar shares a video clip and shares the importance of her Latino identity.
